What really is an Espresso?

It’s appreciated all around the world and even has a day dedicated to it each year. But what really is this special beverage?

Espresso is a coffee drink that originated in Italy but has since been embraced by countries all over the world. The name of the drink means ‘express’ in Italian, or ‘quick in time’ to the rest of the world, but it is mainly appreciated for the concentrated strength of its brew and its signature foam topping. It’s a go-to for coffee lovers who need something to get them through those looooong days.

A little bit of history …

The drink owes its existence to the espresso machine, which was first patented in 1884 by Angelo Moriondo from Turin. Thanks to his innovative methods, it was listed as a steam machine for the instantaneous confection of coffee.

Later, in 1901, Luigi Bezzera from Milano patented his own version of the espresso machine, because he wanted to shorten his employee’s coffee breaks and boost their productivity.

What makes espresso so special?

Espresso is a process of coffee-making that was developed by the same Italian culture that granted the world delights, such as gelato ice cream, tiramisu, and notable brands such as Gucci and Prada.

The iconic drink is also one of the two main components (along with milk) in coffee shop-favourites like lattes and cappuccinos. It uses the finest ground particles, which can form the perfect resistance to an optimal high-pressure and high-temperature brewing process, so to express the best of its aromatic compounds.
